Connect Google Sheets to Windsurf

Windsurf speaks MCP, so its Cascade agent can read a spreadsheet the same way it reads your codebase — if you hand it a server. Here is the one URL that does it.

Key facts

  • Windsurf's Cascade agent supports MCP natively. Servers live in its MCP config, and a remote one is a single serverUrl entry — no plugin, no local process. source
  • MCP is an open protocol built on JSON-RPC 2.0. A server exposes Resources, Prompts and Tools to any MCP client — Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, VS Code and Windsurf all speak it. source
  • PasteSheet's MCP server exposes three tools — list_tabs, get_schema and query_rows — and is read-only by design: an agent can query your sheet but can never modify it.
  • It needs no Google Cloud project, no OAuth consent screen and no service-account JSON. You paste a share URL, and MCP is included on the Free plan.

How do you connect Google Sheets to Windsurf?

Add a Google Sheets MCP server to Windsurf's MCP config and Cascade can query your spreadsheet while you work. Windsurf supports MCP natively, so the whole job is pasting one URL. PasteSheet produces that URL from a pasted Google Sheet link — no Google Cloud project, no local server.

This is most useful when the data you need mid-task lives in a sheet rather than the repo: seed data, copy, feature flags, a product catalog, a pricing table.

Add the server

Open Windsurf's MCP settings and add the server, or edit the config directly. Paste the MCP URL from your endpoint's Connect via MCP panel:

mcp_config.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pastesheet": {
      "serverUrl": "https://pastesheet.com/mcp/sheets/your-endpoint-id"
    }
  }
}

Private sheets

For a private endpoint, send the key as a bearer token — Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY. Want one connector covering every sheet you own instead of one per sheet? Use the workspace server at https://pastesheet.com/mcp with an account key or OAuth.

What it costs

MCP is included on the Free plan. Connect any public endpoint over MCP with no Google Cloud project and no credit card. Private endpoints and the account-wide workspace server need a paid plan (from Starter ($9/mo)) for the keys and OAuth they authenticate with.

Pro adds full-text search and aggregation (count, sum, avg, group_by) that your AI agent can call through query_rows.

Frequently asked questions

Does Windsurf support MCP?

Yes. Windsurf supports MCP servers natively, so its Cascade agent can call any MCP server you register — including a Google Sheets one — without a plugin or extension.

Can Cascade edit my spreadsheet?

No. PasteSheet exposes read-only tools, so Cascade can list tabs, read the schema, and query rows, but it has no way to modify the sheet.

Do I need a Google Cloud project?

No. PasteSheet reads a shared sheet through its link, so there is no Google Cloud project, OAuth client, or service account to set up.

One sheet or all of them?

Both are possible. A per-sheet URL exposes exactly one endpoint; the workspace server at /mcp exposes every sheet in your account through a single connector.
